Day 27: Blood Brothers Count Down Day 27 of 28: Emmerson, Fanfare For The Common Man And Blood Brothers

My new Book - Blood Brothers is to be launched on 1st October. This is last day of the countdown to the launch.

The Best was a short-lived supergroup featuring Keith Emerson (of Emerson, Lake & Palmer) on keyboards, John Entwistle (of The Who) on bass and vocals, Joe Walsh (Eagles, James Gang, and solo fame) on guitar and vocals, Jeff "Skunk" Baxter (Steely Dan, the Doobie Brothers) on guitar, and Simon Phillips (the Jack Bruce Band, 801, the Jeff Beck Group; later of Toto) on drums.

Here is Keith Emerson at his best and I can't think of a better way to celebrate the end of the countdown. Tomorrow is the last day and Blood Brothers will be out there all over the world (courtesy of Amazon)

Day 26: Blood Brothers Count Down Day 26 of 28: We Are Nearly There: Another Extract

Day 26: Blood Brothers Count Down Day 26 of 28: We Are Nearly There: Another Extract

My new Book - Blood Brothers is to be launched on 1st October. This is day 26 of the countdown to the launch and here are the first three paragraphs of Chapter 1.

"Earlier that same day, while the Glamerines were preparing for their concert, a few miles away in a very ordinary house in that very ordinary Midland's town, Middleton, a girl who just might not be ordinary was getting ready to go and see them.

At that time, Jenny Blond was a 17 year old school girl studying for her A Levels. She was living a "nice girl's" life. That meant she lived in a nice house on a nice street, on the nicer side of Middleton. Jenny was the child of two well-meaning and hard-working parents who both taught at the school that Jenny attended. They lived in a shabby-chic Victorian end-of-terrace. I don't think they would have used the words shabby-chic to describe it in 1982, though. It looked out over a lovely park and they had good neighbors. There was a friendly Sikh on one side and a retired shop keeper and his wife on the other. The parents, Robert and Mary Blond, were staunch members of their local Methodist church. And, as for Jenny, she looked the kind of girl who suited her brown school uniform - it went with her mousy brown hair.

Jenny had no intention of spending the rest of her life in Middleton. She was studious at school because that could provide a route out. Her parents had expected her to be academic and she was, because she chose to be. She had her own small circle of very carefully picked friends and her one particular friend, Peggy. Peggy shared her greatest love and that was for Julian Justin and the Glamerines."

Day 25: Blood Brothers Count Down Day 25 of 28: 80's Pop and It is Ultravox and Definitely Not The Glamerines

My new Book - Blood Brothers is to be launched on 1st October. This is day 25 of the countdown to the launch and I thought it was time for some true 80's pop. Here is Ultravox with We Stand Alone.

Ultravox is a British New Wave rock band. They were one of the primary exponents of the British electronic pop music movement of the late 1970s/early 1980s. The band was particularly associated with the New Romantic and New Wave movements.

I'm sure Ultravox would have encountered the Glamerines (featured in Blood Brothers) when they were out on tour in the 80s.

Day 24: Blood Brothers Count Down Day 24 of 28:An Extract - Growing Up Gay And Catholic

Day 24: Blood Brothers Count Down Day 24 of 28:An Extract - Growing Up Gay And Catholic.

My new Book - Blood Brothers is to be launched on 1st October. This is day 24 of the countdown to the launch and today it is a little extract. Here, rock star, Julian, in 1982, is trying to explain his sexuality to the very young Jenny.

"Jenny, I come from a very religious family. I was brought up a Catholic. And, no, I wasn't a little boy who was touched up by his priest. All our priests were lovely and I could even talk to one of them about what was happening to me. I could never tell my mum and dad; they would never have understood and they would have been broken hearted."

He'd been to a Catholic boarding school and it was there he'd realized that he was different. At first, he was appalled by what he felt. He had tried so hard to be a good Catholic boy – just like everyone else. He punished himself day after day for what he thought of as a sin; a mortal sin for which he was going to hell.

"It was that one priest that saved me. Eventually, I found the courage to confess what I was going through and luckily it was him I told. He didn't believe I should do anything about it, but he did believe it was OK for me to be who I was. It wasn't wrong to have the feelings even if he thought it would have been wrong to act on them."

The priest had told him that you didn't lose the love of God just because you were born gay. And, no, it didn't mean he was going to hell.

There was a lot Jenny didn't understand about all of this.  She knew more about homosexuality than she did about Catholicism. But she felt incredibly sorry for the young man beside her and the child he had been. She could feel how the years had hurt. Right then, he was as far from the rock star in her wall poster as it was possible to be. But she found herself caring as a friend far more for the person beside her.  She held on to his hand in hers very tightly. The gesture made him tremble but he fought the urge to cry; he wanted to tell her the rest and why he still covered up his identity as an adult.

"I'd always been a musician and I can't remember a time when I didn't write music."

Music was where he put all his passion and the pain. The first rock concert he went to was a revelation; it was so loud and so absorbing that there was no room for anything else. It was like playing Beethoven very loudly on the piano; it could drive everything else out. Then, he had come to London, originally to uni. but that hadn't lasted. In the first six months, he'd gone completely crazy; picking up one unknown man and then another and then suffering agonies of remorse. With everything else there had been drugs of various kinds. Somehow, through it all, he'd kept playing the music and he'd started singing with a band around the pubs in Camden.

One night, Rod, the leader of the Glamerines, had turned up. They were already an established band and they were looking for someone who had the voice and looks to be their new frontman.

Day 23: Blood Brothers Count Down Day 23 of 28:Cover Work

Day 23: Blood Brothers Count Down Day 23 of 28:Cover Work

So we are getting near now and we've been re-editing the back cover. Thought you might like to know what it now has to say about the mighty Blood Brothers and the lovely Jenny Blond.

Jenny goes to school with the twins, Terry, and the shadowy and distinctly odd, Georgy.  She doesn't have much to do with them when they are kids. And she has no idea how their lives will intertwine with hers later, nor the tragic and frightening consequences.

Young Jenny is determined to go on her own journey. She gets the chance when she meets glamorous but troubled rock god, Julian; a man desperately in need of a wife!

Terry goes on to become the tough and edgy, Steve Chance, celebrity wrestler; whilst Georgy has his own private interests.

The plot moves between quite different worlds. We travel from a quiet suburban house in the English Midlands to life in five star hotels in London and Paris. Then on to the casinos of Las Vegas, returning to visit a rather unusual clinic somewhere in the English countryside and even sample life in prison.

This is a love story, of course. But it is complicated, quirky and distinctly adult! Certainly, Jenny doesn't meet her prince, marry and then live happily ever after; not for a while anyway!

Blood Brothers mixes the world of rock and the excitement of international celebrity wrestling with a touch of the criminal underworld.  This is a modern adventure story with adult romance, a little tragedy and just a tiny sprinkling of horror and suspense.
Bet you can't wait. Well Blood Brothers is due to be published on 1st October 2013

Day 22: Blood Brothers Count Down Day 22 of 28:How The Wolf Project Came To Be!

How The Wolf Project Came To Be!

My new Book - Blood Brothers is to be launched on 1st October. This is day 22 of the countdown to the launch and I'm writing about my first book, The Wolf Project.
.
I never expected to write a novel! No, that isn’t entirely true; I had stopped expecting to write a novel!

Oh, yes, early in life, I had big ideas about writing something “important.”

No, not an “everyday” novel that people would enjoy and then put down to get on with the rest of their lives. I wanted to write a work of "literature".

Did I set the bar too high? I don’t thinks so! I think just didn’t understand the sheer hard work and talent that goes into producing that novel that people enjoy and then put down.

Anyway, I didn't write a book and I got on with  what I considered to be “real” life. I stopped expecting to write a novel.

I’ve written elsewhere about then starting to blog and the discipline in writing every day that serious blogging brings with it.  So when I started blogging a few years ago, writing prose of all kinds became a thing of habit.
Still I had no expectations on the novel writing front.

In June 2012, things changed. I went to bed one Friday night expecting nothing out of the ordinary. But when I woke up next morning, life had changed. I’d had a dream.

I don’t know what else happened in my dream, except at one point I was walking down a country road.  I could see something that looked like a jeep coming towards me. It stopped and out of  got a figure in uniform. He stood before me looking me me straight in the eye with a challenge.

I told my partner Owen that I had dreamed about an American General and I was going to write a novel. I wrote The Wolf Project and hero, of course, is the charismatic, General Jet Meadows.

Day 21: Blood Brothers Count Down Day 21 of 28: You Will Love The Glamerines

Day 21: Blood Brothers Count Down Day 21 of 28: You Will Love The Glamerines

New Book - Blood Brothers is to be launched on 1st October. This is day 21 of the countdown to the launch.

Come with me back to the 80s and those wonderful and very glamorous bands and artists like David Bowie!

If you liked them, you'll love the Glamerines and the gloriously handsome Julian Justin, their frontman.

If you weren't around then, you'll still enjoy meeting them and the lovely Julian!

Great survivors are the Glamerines.

As styles change, they just rock on, with the base and the volume turned up or down as suits.

They always follow fashion - in their own rock and roll way!

They have a special look, with make-up that would make a Paris model jealous.

Smooth as a peach and beautiful they are at the start of their set.

Of course, two hours later, the black stubble is breaking through again.

On stage, once they start to sweat, they look as rough and tough as their music.

And the lovely Julian, with a voice like wild honey?

Well, Julian always looks as sweet as their sweetest song and as strong as the prince in a teenage fan's dreams.

In the 80s, how the girls love Julian!

Strong, beautiful and very masculine are the Glamerines - and Julian?

On-stage, he is loved by every woman.

Off-stage, the girls still love him, but Julian? Well, his thoughts go in another direction!

So there he is; a six foot two, slim but well-muscled, streak of silver; so powerful on stage with his beautiful long, blond hair.

But trouble is stalking the Glamerines!

Blood Brothers and the Glamerines are coming on 1st October!

Day 16: Blood Brothers Count Down Day 16 of 28 - Great New Video from Róisín O - Hold On

Great New Video from Róisín O - Hold On

My new novel, Blood Brothers, is to be launched on 1st October. This is day 16 of the countdown to the launch.

I've had the privilege over the last couple of days to preview a video from Róisín O. It so lovely.

The video is released today and catch it if you can.  She has the most fantastic voice - the kind that raises those little hairs on you arm. Her voice resonates right through to your heart.

This is what Róisín herself has to say about the song;
"Sometimes our minds take us to dark places and it gets hard to escape. A very close friend of
mine was going through a tough time, as happens us all, and I found myself wanting, but unable,
to help make things better for him. Sometimes all you can do for someone is to be there for them and let them know that things will get better one day. This song is for him."

The song touched me deeply because over the last few months a number of different people in my life have been going through difficult times and all I have been able to do has been to witness!

The video is directed and edited by Simon Eustace, and features Aaron Heffernan (Love/Hate),
Mirjana Rendulic, Geraldine McAlinden and Colin Condon.

Róisín has recently signed a record deal with JSM in Germany, and her debut album ‘The Secret Life of Blue’ will be released in Germany, Austria & Switzerland on October 4th. Róisín is heading to Germany in October for a 17 date tour supporting Ryan Sheridan.

You can find out more about Róisín at this link www.RoisinO.com and the Hold On video should appear there shortly - Don't miss it!

Blood Brothers Count Down Day 15 of 28 - The Wonderful Mr Bowie nominated for the Barclaycard Mercury Prize for The Next Day

My new novel, Blood Brothers, is to be launched on 1st October. This is day 15 of the countdown to the launch.

I wrote on Day 4 about the wonderful David Bowie - here is the link http://bloodbrothersthenovel.blogspot.co.uk/2013/09/blood-brothers-count-down-day-4-or-28.html

David Bowie had had a ten year hiatus from music before launching his 2013 album,The Next Day. But clearly he has still got it. The album has been nominated for the Barclaycard Mercury Prize.

The Next Day is considered one of the best releases from the last year and could take home the prestigious award this October.

Not only is he the oldest nominee at 66-years old in the 2013 list, but also in the history of the Mercury Music prize, sharing the honour with Jazz pianist Stan Tracey who was the same age as Bowie when he was nominated for Portraits Plus in 1999

Day 14: Blood Brothers Count Down Day 14 of 28: NaNoWriMo; The Young Writers Program

Day 14: Blood Brothers Count Down Day 14 of 28: NaNoWriMo; The Young Writers Program

My new novel, Blood Brothers, is to be launched on 1st October. This is day 14 of the countdown to the launch. Half way there!

And, today, it is more on NaNoWriMo and their young writer's program.

Nothing for me is more important than giving young people the confidence to start writing. Here is what the the Chris Angotti, the NaNoWriMo Director of Programs, has to say about their program.

"Every year, kids and teens around the world turbo-charge their writing during the month of November.

We consider NaNoWriMo the ultimate power-up for classroom creativity: with more resources than you can shake a Procrastination Slug at (note: we don’t recommend this) and a community all its own, our Young Writers Program will bring the novel-in-a-month challenge to nearly 100,000 K-12 students in 2013. We do this in a couple of ways:

The first is through our 2,000 brilliant, energetic educators. Starting in September, they order our free classroom kit, take advantage of our Common Core-aligned curricula, and get their students organized in Virtual Classrooms. For a sense of how one teacher makes it all happen, check out Kim Votry’s video of her kids’ planning-to-self-publishing journey.

The second is through our giant crew of independent young writers. Even now, they’re gabbing in our forums, filling out our engaging prewriting workbooks (they’ve got you covered on character building), and revisiting past pep talks for some early inspiration. (Did you know we had two Newbery and two Printz Award winners provide pep last year?)

We’re incredibly proud of the work we do with the YWP. We believe that stories matter for everyone, and that they especially matter for kids and teens."

My new novel, Blood Brothers, is to be launched on 1st October. This is day 13 of the countdown to the launch. Today, something for fellow writers!

Salman Rushdie believes the key to writing is concentration, not inspiration! He believes it requires deep attention to your characters, to the world they live in, and to the story you have to tell. Here is what he has to say:

My new novel, Blood Brothers, is to be launched on 1st October. This is day 12 of the countdown to the launch.

A rock band features in Blood Brothers and, oh yes, I do love rock!

This was published recently in honor of the 36th anniversary of Elvis Presley's death on August 16, 1977.

Here, The Golden God (the wonderful Robert Plant) explains his admiration for The King (Elvis Presley).

As for me?  Well, I think they are both wonderful!

Day 2: Blood Brothers Count Down Day 2 of 28: Liz Meets the General Plus the Blood Brother's Facebook Page

Day 2: Blood Brothers Count Down Day 2 of 28: Liz Meets the General Plus The Blood Brother's Facebook Page

For those who missed my own Facebook post here is what appeared on Day 2 on The Wolf Project Blog!

Liz meets the General

Day 2 in the 28 day countdown to the launch of my second novel, Blood Brothers, and I've been thinking about my first one, The Wolf Project. I loved writing about Liz and Jet and how their lives intertwined. Here in this extract is Liz's first encounter with General Jet Meadows. I hope you enjoy it. You can find the rest of the book at this link.

"You look lovely by the way – Wales must be good for you."  Alex always knew how to make her feel confident.
"So, what do you think they want – General Jet and his Gattling Gun?" Alex chortled.. "Gattling Gun?  No, no, that is not the right word but it is definitely the lovely Annabel who is shooting the bullets on this. She is truly  formidable! It is Annabel I've been speaking to through our American partner. Annabel is determined the General will take his "rightful" place in American history. He retires in a few months and she wants to publish the book to coincide. I think he usually does what she wants – she is quite a character." "And his rightful place?" Alex looked quizzical; "Hmm, that is going to be for you to judge. They are here for three weeks. He has some official things to do and she has friends here but I think they want to make some trips as well and he likes fishing. He likes hunting too but I don't think we have anything big enough. You won't get much time with them in London. You should get an interesting trip to Washington."

Liz wasn't very keen on the hunters of this world and she shivered. Although she had gone fishing with Evan on their river in Wales, she didn't like killing things. But a trip to Washington could be an intriguing experience. It sounded even better when Alex added; "They are prepared to pay very generous travelling expenses and your fee is going to be outrageous. It will be paid in the UK in Sterling, of course."

It was time to get into a taxi and make the journey to Browns. The journey from Soho Square to Albemarle Street in Mayfair wasn't far but Liz wasn't in the mood to walk. She never really enjoyed meeting new clients these days.  But she knew she was a good writer and a very good researcher. On this commission, that, and the ability to get on with the General and his wife, seemed to be the main requirements.  She knew that Alex had done what he could to prepare the way on both sides.

The Meadows were a striking couple. Annabel Hutchison Meadows had been, and remained, a beauty! She was in her fifties, the mother of two grown-up children and grandmother of three. But you would have guessed much younger. She was petite, blond, slim and had just the slightest Southern accent. If Liz had pictured an elegant American grand dame in pocket size, Annabel would have been it. Suddenly, Liz very much wished she'd stuck to that healthy eating plan – she was what the kind call curvaceous. Annabel was charming, of course. But, Liz had no doubt that she was someone who expected to be taken very seriously indeed. This lady usually got what she wanted in life.

As for the General! Well, even out of uniform and in a plain dark suit, you'd notice him in a crowded room. He was tall and quite broad at the shoulder and very fit looking. The photo didn't do him justice! He was good looking but there was something about his eyes that looked weary - almost as if he had seen to much.
